Where science and consciousness meet
The Science of Consciousness Conference (TSCC) is the world’s longest-running interdisciplinary conference dedicated to the study of consciousness, the nature of existence, and our place in the universe. Since 1994, TSCC has been held annually, alternating between Tucson, Arizona (USA), and international host locations including Italy, Denmark, Japan, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Hong Kong, India, California, Switzerland, Finland, and, most recently before Barcelona, Taormina in Sicily (2023).
In 2025, TSCC was held in Barcelona, Spain, in collaboration with The Festival of Consciousness, which served as the conference’s pre-event and complementary gathering.
A paradigm shift in consciousness research
We are at a pivotal moment in the centuries-long quest to understand consciousness. Over the past three decades, two major approaches to understanding consciousness have emerged:
- “neurocomputational” perspectives, which view the brain as a highly complex computational system built from relatively simple neurons—a view consistent with the possibility that artificial intelligence systems could eventually become conscious.
- “fundamental” perspectives, which regard consciousness as an intrinsic property of the universe, connected to the brain through quantum biology.
By exploring this second perspective, TSCC integrates biology and neuroscience in a far more rigorous way than models based on simple neurons that are compatible with artificial intelligence. Paradoxically, the emergence of conscious artificial intelligence may be more likely in biomimetic quantum computers.
